Take a hike into Cretan Spring this April

January 30, 2026

April is the perfect month to visit Chania and it is certainly an amaizing destination for those who love nature and to walk.

With interesting walking and hiking paths through the unspoiled gorges. With amazing diversity, natural beauty and living traditions it's dry climate combined with the sea breeze forms an ideal environment for avid walkers and joggers.

The Region of Crete and the Municipality of Apokoronas we have been working together these past few years on the creation of the island's first comprehensive network of hiking trails.

These 12 trails, covering a total length of some 130 kilometers, take visitors on a journey of discovery and exploration through one of the most beautiful parts of the island. They form a connection between the Apokoronas countryside's distinctive cultural and natural heritage, while also allowing visitors/hikers a glimpse into the real lives of its residents, people who live between the cities of Chania and Rethymno, looking out to the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) on one side and the Cretan Sea on the other.

The contribution of Paths of Greece and Staridas Geography was invaluable to the success of planning and executing the project for the Apokoronas hiking trails network, while the Pemptousia social cooperative has been instrumental in keeping up its maintenance.

With an abundance of monuments, landscapes, productive output and intangible heritage, Apokoronas ended up becoming the first step in the creation of Chania Trails. This 700-kilometer network of 70 paths covering the entire Regional Unit, recasts Chania as a comprehensive hiking destination that boasts an almost inexhaustible font of cultural and natural resources in its still-authentic hinterland.
